An attacking midfielder who left the Premier League on Saturday has disclosed that Tottenham showed interest in signing him.
Reports at the beginning of the January transfer window suggested Spurs were monitoring a wide range of attacking players across Europe, with reinforcements in the final third seen as the club’s main objective. Despite those intentions, Tottenham have been unable to bolster their forward options, even after injuries to Lucas Bergvall, Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison.
Tottenham and Chelsea both contacted Lucas Paquetá
Earlier in the window, Spurs were said to have made an approach for Lucas Paquetá, who has since completed a move back to Brazilian side Flamengo. The Brazil international has now confirmed that both Tottenham and Chelsea expressed interest before he opted to return to his former club.
Speaking on Flamengo TV, Paquetá said:
“Tottenham called, Chelsea called, and the funny thing is that Tata (my agent) rang me really excited saying, ‘Chelsea are calling, they want to make an offer.’ I said, ‘That’s fine, but what about Flamengo?’”
Will Spurs spring a late deadline-day surprise?
Frustration among Tottenham supporters is understandable, given the team’s ongoing struggles to create chances and score from open play. While Thomas Frank has not ruled out late additions before the window closes, he has stressed that he is unwilling to bring in short-term solutions.
With the deadline approaching and no indication that Spurs are close to completing a deal, it would be a significant surprise if the club were to pull off a last-minute attacking signing.
