There has been widespread debate among Spurs fans over Roberto De Zerbi’s potential starting lineup against Sunderland, as supporters wait to see how Tottenham will set up under the Italian. It remains unclear whether the new boss will adopt an attacking, fearless approach or opt for a more cautious and pragmatic style given the club’s current situation.
The former Brighton manager is being tipped to make a surprising decision in midfield at the Stadium of Light. While Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall are both expected to start if fit, the main question is who will partner the young duo.
Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has suggested that instead of choosing the youthful energy of Pape Matar Sarr, De Zerbi could turn to the experience and defensive strength of Joao Palhinha.
Bridge said: “Lucas Bergvall could benefit from De Zerbi’s arrival, with the two seen working closely in training, which suggests the Swedish midfielder could play a key role. I expect him to start alongside fellow teenager Archie Gray, who stood out under Tudor. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if De Zerbi opts for the physical presence and experience of Joao Palhinha.
“The Bayern Munich loanee, who leads the Premier League in tackles this season, was once viewed as an obvious candidate for a permanent deal but has had an inconsistent spell in recent months. I believe De Zerbi will go with Gray and Bergvall in midfield, leaving the attacking quartet to complete his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.”
Bridge also shared his view on Xavi Simons, who had begun to find his rhythm in the Premier League during Thomas Frank’s final weeks in charge.
Although the Dutch midfielder was not a regular starter under Igor Tudor, Bridge expects him to play a significant role under De Zerbi.
He added: “Tottenham are short of creativity at the moment, and with Dejan Kulusevski likely out for the rest of the season and James Maddison still recovering from an ACL injury, Simons is set to play a crucial role under De Zerbi.”
