A former Liverpool midfielder has officially hung up his boots, ending a 22-year journey that saw him rise from academy prospect to a winner of both the Champions League and Premier League.
Adam Lallana shared the news via Instagram, writing: “As I call time on my playing career, I do so with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and pride.”
Now 36, he made 178 appearances for Liverpool FC after arriving from Southampton FC in 2014, contributing 22 goals and 21 assists in all competitions.
During his time at Anfield, he collected four major honours — including the 2019 Champions League and the 2019/20 Premier League title — before moving on to Brighton & Hove Albion and later returning to Southampton, where his career came full circle.
“Southampton… the place where it all started, and fittingly where it ends,” he wrote. “It’s the club I ultimately owe everything to.”
However, his peak years came at Liverpool, where he thrived on the biggest stage. “Liverpool… the chance to represent one of the greatest clubs in the world and win some of the biggest prizes in the game.”
He also spoke warmly about his time at Brighton, describing it as “home to some of the happiest years of my life” and praising the club’s strong community values and modern structure.
It was during his spell with the Seagulls that he formed a close relationship with Alexis Mac Allister — a connection that may have played a role in the midfielder’s eventual move to Anfield.
Reflecting on his journey, Lallana expressed deep appreciation for everyone involved along the way. “To everyone who made the journey so special… the managers and coaches, my teammates, and of course the supporters — thank you.”
He also highlighted the support of his family: “My wife Emily, our amazing sons, my mum, dad and sister — thank you for putting up with me and being in my corner through it all.”
“I’m proud of the playing career I’ve had and have no regrets,” he added. “I embrace all the highs and all the lows as they’ve shaped me into who I am.”
In the closing stages of his career, he was even briefly linked to an off-pitch role, providing insight to Pep Guardiola on Pep Lijnders before the latter joined Manchester City as assistant manager.
For now, though, the spotlight remains on Lallana — a player who gave his all wherever he played and will always be remembered at Liverpool as part of the squad that restored the club to the summit of world football.
