Tottenham Hotspur could be edging closer to a managerial shake-up after reports described a “major development” surrounding Thomas Frank’s future, with a club legend emerging as the preferred long-term successor.
Frank swapped Brentford for Spurs ahead of the 2025/26 season following Ange Postecoglou’s departure, earning the opportunity after overachieving with the Bees. However, his spell in north London has failed to live up to expectations. While he initially built goodwill with supporters, frustration has grown over Tottenham’s flat performances and lack of attacking intent in key fixtures.
Results have done little to ease the pressure. Spurs remain stuck in the bottom half of the Premier League and, statistically and stylistically, appear no further advanced than they were under Postecoglou. As a result, Frank has spent much of the campaign among the bookmakers’ favourites to be dismissed, a situation that persisted heading into the weekend clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
According to journalist Fraser Fletcher, writing for TEAMtalk, Tottenham are already planning ahead. The report claims Mauricio Pochettino has effectively given the green light to a dramatic return once his World Cup commitments conclude. The Argentine, who is set to lead the United States at this summer’s tournament, would “unequivocally” accept a second spell at Spurs if approached after the competition.
In the short term, insiders suggest continued poor results could force Tottenham’s hand, leading to Frank’s removal before the end of the season. Should that happen, Johnny Heitinga has been identified as the frontrunner to take charge on an interim basis, with the Dutchman already well integrated into the club’s coaching setup.
The reasoning behind Tottenham’s patience is said to be strategic rather than sentimental. Club chiefs are believed to be willing to endure short-term turbulence in order to position themselves for a higher-calibre managerial appointment once the World Cup concludes — with Pochettino firmly at the top of that list.
Ahead of the Manchester United fixture, Frank defended his record and pushed back against comparisons between the two clubs, pointing to the added strain of European football.
“It’s worth noting that Manchester United aren’t playing in Europe,” Frank explained. “That brings extra challenges, but it’s something we accept and embrace. Judge us when we’re facing the same demands.
“Our ambition is clear — we want to perform well, continue improving, and beat Manchester United.”
Frank also praised United’s recent upturn under Michael Carrick, highlighting the renewed energy within the squad and the influence of players such as Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes.
“They pose a real threat, but it’s a challenge we’re looking forward to,” he added. “If we organise ourselves properly, we can compete.”
Despite those words, uncertainty continues to swirl around Frank’s position — and with Pochettino waiting in the wings, the next few weeks could prove decisive for Tottenham’s hierarchy.
