Now Luka Vušković has added another highlight to his growing reputation after converting a penalty in this afternoon’s Bundesliga clash away to VfL Wolfsburg.
The 19-year-old’s scoring ability is nothing new. During his loan spell at KVC Westerlo last season he scored seven goals, and he also found the net three times in 14 appearances for Polish side Radomiak Radom.
However, his latest strike carried special significance. Vušković has now made history by becoming the first teenager to score a penalty for Hamburger SV in 55 years.
The goal was his fifth of the Bundesliga campaign, which explains why HSV are eager to extend his loan deal for another season.
Interestingly, Hamburg were awarded another penalty in the second half, but this time Jean-Luc Dompé stepped up to take it instead of Vušković and also converted from the spot.
Vušković has previously spoken about his desire to one day play alongside his brother Mario Vušković, who is expected to return to action in November after completing a doping suspension.
Last week, following Hamburg’s 1–0 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, the young defender showed his frustration by throwing his boots toward the substitutes’ bench. Despite the outburst, HSV head coach Merlin Polzin later praised the incident, saying it reflected the player’s strong desire to win.
Regardless of how the rest of the season unfolds — including the situation in north London as Tottenham Hotspur fight to avoid relegation — Vušković is expected to return to Spurs in the summer.
That’s because Hamburg do not have an option to sign him permanently. Even if they want to keep the Croatian on loan, they would need to negotiate a new deal with Tottenham.
There is already growing interest in the defender, with several clubs reportedly keeping a close eye on his progress.
Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds the long-term futures of Spurs defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, which could encourage Tottenham to keep Vušković if either player departs.
For now, the club’s priority is more immediate. Igor Tudor and his side are still unsure which division they will be playing in next season, making it unlikely that a quick decision will be made about Vušković’s future.
The teenager is also expected to represent Croatia national football team at this summer’s FIFA World Cup finals, which should provide him with valuable experience on the international stage.
