Dominik Szoboszlai delivered a blunt verdict on Liverpool F.C.’s situation after a frustrating 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.
The Hungarian midfielder had put Liverpool ahead early with a trademark free-kick, but the Reds were stunned in dramatic fashion when Richarlison struck a 90th-minute equaliser, leaving the home supporters shocked and disappointed.
The result leaves Liverpool’s hopes of finishing in the top four hanging by a thread, and Szoboszlai admitted the team could even miss out on Europe’s biggest competitions if their form does not improve quickly.
Szoboszlai criticises Liverpool after Tottenham draw
Speaking to Sky Sports shortly after the final whistle, Szoboszlai did not hide his frustration with the team’s performance.
He described the result as a major disappointment and said the squad must “wake up,” pointing out that conceding late goals has become a recurring problem this season.
Szoboszlai admitted he felt deflated after the match and warned that if Liverpool continue playing this way, they may have to settle for a place in the UEFA Europa Conference League rather than competing in Europe’s top tournaments.
He also explained that Liverpool controlled the first half and limited Spurs to very few chances, but failed to maintain the same level after the break.
Despite the frustration, the midfielder stressed that the squad must stay united during this difficult period and work through the problems together. He also said supporters have every right to be unhappy with recent performances, although he urged them to continue backing the team as they did during last season’s successful campaign.
More pressure building on Arne Slot
The draw has increased scrutiny on Liverpool manager Arne Slot, whose side has seen their title challenge collapse into a tense battle for Champions League qualification.
Although the club’s leadership are reportedly still backing the Dutch coach, failing to close out a Tottenham side that arrived at Anfield struggling for form is being viewed as a major tactical setback.
Slot’s decision to adopt a more defensive approach in the second half ultimately proved costly, as Spurs managed to find a last-minute breakthrough.
With a crucial Champions League encounter against Galatasaray S.K. approaching and a difficult clash with Manchester City F.C. on the horizon, Liverpool face a defining period.
