Former Tottenham forward Lucas Moura has been taken to hospital after suffering a worrying injury during São Paulo FC’s 1–0 defeat to Atlético Mineiro.
The 33-year-old came on as a substitute but his appearance quickly turned into a nightmare. Just 12 minutes after entering the game, Moura was involved in a heavy collision with Tomás Cuello. The impact caused serious facial injuries and reportedly left him with two broken ribs, which immediately led to breathing problems. Medical staff rushed onto the pitch before he was stretchered off and taken straight to hospital.
São Paulo later confirmed that the attacker is currently undergoing medical tests in Belo Horizonte. The club also stated that he will return to São Paulo to continue treatment once his condition becomes stable.
The injury is a huge blow for São Paulo, who had been in excellent form with a six-match unbeaten run before the defeat. The loss not only ended their momentum but also prevented them from moving level on points with league rivals Palmeiras at the top of the table.
Moura’s return to São Paulo in 2023 was viewed as an emotional homecoming following his successful years in Europe. During his time at Tottenham, he became a fan favourite — especially after his unforgettable hat-trick against Ajax in the 2019 Champions League semi-final, which sent Spurs through to the final against Liverpool.
