Arne Slot has offered a worrying update on Alexander Isak’s recovery, with Liverpool supporters now facing a longer wait to see the club’s record signing return to action.
The Sweden forward, who arrived at Anfield last summer in a British-record £125 million deal, has been out since late December after fracturing his fibula against Tottenham.
Ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Isak’s former side Newcastle United at Anfield this weekend, Slot confirmed the striker is still some distance away from rejoining full first-team training.
Arne Slot admits Isak is nowhere near a comeback
Speaking at Friday’s pre-match press conference, Slot gave a frank assessment of Isak’s condition.
Although the 26-year-old has recently stopped using a protective walking boot during the early stages of his rehabilitation, he remains unfit to train outdoors.
Slot explained:
“No, he’s not on the pitch yet. He’s only just out of the boot, so that tells you he won’t be on the pitch today or tomorrow. It will still take some time before he’s back, which we were already aware of.”
The update is a setback for a Liverpool side still searching for momentum in 2026.
Earlier reports had pointed towards a possible late-March return, but Slot’s comments — confirming Isak hasn’t yet trained on the grass — indicate a far more cautious recovery plan.
Ekitike steps up in Isak’s absence
While Isak’s prolonged absence is frustrating, Liverpool have been able to cope thanks to the impressive form of fellow summer signing Hugo Ekitike.
The former Frankfurt forward has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Anfield, scoring 13 goals in all competitions so far.
Ekitike was outstanding in midweek, producing a brilliant solo strike during Liverpool’s emphatic 6-0 Champions League victory over Qarabag.
His pace, movement and finishing have allowed him to lead the line effectively, ensuring Isak’s absence has not been heavily felt.
With Isak set to miss the reunion against Newcastle, Ekitike is once again expected to start up front as Liverpool chase their first Premier League win of the new year.
