Liverpool prospect Josh Abe has been ruled out for the rest of the season after sustaining a serious injury while on international duty.
The 15-year-old winger, who has made a significant impact for the under-18s this term, picked up the injury while representing England U16s at a tournament in Antalya, Turkey, featuring matches against Denmark, Spain and France. After scoring against Denmark earlier in the week, Abe appeared to injure his left knee following an awkward fall under a challenge early in Thursday’s 2-1 defeat to France. He managed to continue for around 15 minutes before eventually limping off.
Over the weekend, Abe confirmed on Instagram that the setback will keep him out for the remainder of the campaign.
“Tough one to take having my season cut short, but everything happens for a reason,” he wrote.
The teenager will now return to Liverpool for further assessment before beginning his rehabilitation programme.
Abe has enjoyed an impressive season with the U18s, scoring eight goals in 10 U18 Premier League North appearances, including a hat-trick against Leeds United in his most recent outing. He also became the youngest player to represent Liverpool in the UEFA Youth League.
His performances have attracted interest from several clubs, including Manchester City and Chelsea. He was recently given a tour of Real Madrid’s facilities after signing with Tyler Alexander-Arnold’s PLG Agency.
Liverpool are keen to retain Abe’s services and have offered him a scholarship. Last month, he was also invited to train with Arne Slot’s first-team squad.
