Former Keith Wyness has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur players could see their wages cut by around 50% if the club are relegated from the Premier League this season. The claim came during an exclusive interview with Football Insider, after earlier reports suggested such clauses were not included in the players’ contracts.
With Igor Tudor’s side currently sitting just one point above the relegation zone, the potential pay reduction would help soften the financial impact if Spurs were to drop into the EFL Championship, where club revenues are significantly lower.
However, Wyness believes many players would refuse to accept such a large salary cut. The former chief executive — who previously held roles at Everton F.C., Aston Villa F.C. and Aberdeen F.C. — explained that relegation clauses are vital for clubs but often trigger player departures.
Speaking on the Inside Track podcast by Football Insider, Wyness said it had initially been rumoured that Tottenham lacked those clauses but it has now emerged they are in place. Drawing from his experience when Aston Villa were relegated, he stressed that having wage-reduction agreements was essential for managing the club’s finances after dropping out of the Premier League.
He added that once salaries fall to around half their original level, many players typically seek moves elsewhere rather than remain under those conditions.
Meanwhile, sources have told Football Insider that Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange could face the sack following the club’s disappointing campaign.
Senior figures at Spurs are reportedly under scrutiny as the club evaluates leadership decisions regardless of whether they survive in the Premier League. Lange played a key role in appointing both Thomas Frank and Tudor, with the latter already under pressure after only three matches in charge.
