Tottenham Hotspur are facing a fresh controversy involving Micky van de Ven.

Tottenham Hotspur supporters have grown increasingly frustrated with several high-profile players in recent weeks. After his costly red card that effectively handed the match to Crystal Palace the previous weekend, Micky van de Ven has come under growing scrutiny from fans.

Despite still being regarded as one of the most promising young defenders in world football—and attracting interest from Real Madrid and FC Barcelona—some believe Van de Ven’s focus may already be drifting toward those major clubs, while Spurs continue to battle the threat of dropping into the EFL Championship.

The contrast was particularly noticeable during Sunday’s important 1–1 draw with Liverpool FC, a result that keeps Tottenham just ahead in the relegation fight alongside Nottingham Forest and rivals West Ham United.

Danso impresses in Van de Ven’s absence

Kevin Danso started in central defence and delivered a strong performance. Even with Radu Dragusin struggling alongside him, the Austrian handled Liverpool’s attack well. He repeatedly put his body on the line, at one point preventing a near-certain goal and producing several high-level defensive moments against the reigning champions.

Danso’s determination stood out and resonated with Spurs supporters. While few would claim he is a more naturally gifted defender than Van de Ven, the resilience and character he displayed are qualities many believe Tottenham desperately need during this relegation battle.

A selection dilemma for Tudor

With Danso performing strongly in recent matches, interim coach Igor Tudor now faces a difficult decision. He must decide whether to restore Van de Ven to the starting lineup alongside captain Cristian Romero or continue with Danso in central defence. If Danso keeps his place, another question arises—whether Van de Ven could shift to left-back, particularly if Destiny Udogie returns to availability.

Recent performances have placed Van de Ven in a complicated position, with criticism directed at his rash challenges and lack of the qualities—such as pace and athleticism—that normally define his game. As Tottenham fight to avoid relegation, the determination and commitment shown by Danso could become increasingly important in the weeks ahead.
