Forget Tottenham Hotspur’s past with Mauricio Pochettino — the club should take a bold and unexpected step by appointing a current Premier League manager instead.

Forget Mauricio Pochettino — Tottenham Hotspur may need to make a surprising move by appointing a current Premier League manager instead.

Spurs are reportedly considering several options for next season. Former Brighton & Hove Albion and Olympique de Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi is viewed as a “dream” appointment, while Pochettino also remains a popular choice within the club, with both open to the role.

However, both managers are expected to attract strong interest from top sides this summer, and Tottenham’s current situation may not be the most enticing. As a result, the club cannot afford to rely solely on those options and must consider alternatives — including Michael Carrick.

Carrick, currently linked with Manchester United, is a former Spurs player who understands the club’s expectations. He has also shown an ability to steady teams, implement a clear style of play, and deliver results in the Premier League.

De Zerbi, despite earning praise for his attacking approach, faced difficulties handling expectations at Marseille and would arrive in north London under significant pressure to deliver immediate change. His tendency to create tension at clubs could also be a concern given Spurs’ current environment.

As for Pochettino, returning to a former club often brings heightened expectations, especially considering his previous success in charge.

Carrick, by contrast, would arrive without that burden, bringing both familiarity and a solid managerial track record. With uncertainty surrounding Manchester United’s long-term plans, Tottenham could have a clear opportunity to secure his appointment.
