Former Lucas Moura was rushed to hospital after sustaining a serious injury during São Paulo FC’s 1–0 loss to Atlético Mineiro.
The 33-year-old forward came off the bench, but his outing quickly turned sour. Just 12 minutes after entering the match, he collided heavily with Tomás Cuello, suffering significant facial injuries. Reports also suggest he broke two ribs, leading to breathing difficulties. Medical personnel immediately attended to him on the pitch before he was stretchered off and taken to hospital.
São Paulo later confirmed that Moura is undergoing medical examinations in Belo Horizonte and will be transported back to São Paulo for further treatment once his condition stabilizes.
The setback is a major blow for São Paulo, who had been enjoying a six-game unbeaten streak prior to the defeat. The loss not only halted their run but also denied them the chance to draw level on points with league leaders Palmeiras.
Moura’s return to São Paulo in 2023 marked a heartfelt homecoming after a successful spell in Europe. During his time at Tottenham Hotspur, he became a fan favourite, most notably for his unforgettable hat-trick against Ajax in the 2019 Champions League semi-final that sent Spurs into the final against Liverpool.
