Tottenham star Cristian Romero may miss out on a move to Atletico Madrid for the second consecutive summer, despite repeated transfer links.
Tottenham Hotspur’s relegation fears intensified following a 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on Sunday, leaving them the only Premier League club to enter the March international break without a league win in 2026.
Spurs captain Romero described the loss as “painful and sad,” acknowledging the tough situation, while promising to give “200 per cent” in Tottenham’s “last seven finals” after the international break. However, when asked about his future amid Atletico Madrid interest, Romero gave a non-committal response, stating, “We will see.”
The Argentine defender was heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid last year, with Diego Simeone reportedly in regular contact. Romero ultimately signed a new contract until 2029 after Tottenham qualified for the Champions League via Europa League success.
Atletico Madrid have continued monitoring Romero and were reportedly considering a €50 million bid this summer. However, internal discussions at the Spanish club remain inconclusive, with factors such as Romero’s price, Tottenham’s league status, and the player’s own stance influencing any decision. The club is understood to be unwilling to exceed £26 million for the defender, despite his long-term contract at White Hart Lane.
Regardless of Tottenham’s fate over the next months, there is an expectation that Romero could leave this summer. Internally, Spurs recognize that selling the 27-year-old may be in the best interest of all parties, given his disciplinary issues and inconsistent performances, which have contributed to the team’s struggles.
Even if Atletico Madrid ultimately pass on Romero, he is likely to attract interest from other top clubs. Tottenham, however, are unlikely to accept a fee as low as £26 million, even in the event of relegation.
