Tottenham Hotspur suffered yet another disastrous night, dropping points at home to Brighton & Hove Albion in Round 33 of the Premier League on April 18, leaving them stuck in the bottom three.
Spurs came into the match under huge pressure after going 15 straight league games without a win. Despite that, the hosts started brightly and played on the front foot.
Their efforts paid off in the 39th minute when Xavi Simons delivered a pinpoint cross for Pedro Porro to head home the opener. Moments later, Spurs nearly doubled their lead, but Simons’ curling effort hit the post, and Porro’s follow-up was denied by Bart Verbruggen.
That wastefulness proved costly. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Kaoru Mitoma fired in a stunning volley from a pass by Pascal Groß to level the score at 1-1.
After the break, Brighton took control and kept piling on the pressure. Still, Spurs found a way back in the 77th minute thanks to a moment of brilliance from Simons. Picking up the ball from Lucas Bergvall, he turned sharply and curled a superb strike from outside the box to restore the lead at 2-1.
Just when it looked like Spurs would finally end their winless run, disaster struck again in stoppage time. A costly mistake from Kevin Danso allowed Jan Paul van Hecke to win the ball and set up Georginio Rutter, who calmly curled in a late equalizer to make it 2-2.
The stadium fell silent after the defensive lapse, and the result means Tottenham remain in the relegation zone. With just five games left, the threat of their first relegation since 1977 is becoming very real for the North London side.
