Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool FC are edging closer to completing two of their most important deals of the summer.
Liverpool FC are still in negotiations to tie down both Dominik Szoboszlai and Ibrahima Konaté to new contracts, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Their current deals run until 2028 and 2026 respectively, with discussions for the French defender believed to be further along than those involving the Hungarian midfielder. Romano shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the club are optimistic about reaching an agreement with Konaté, while talks with Szoboszlai continue to progress.
Although strengthening the attack remains a priority this summer, securing these extensions would be a major boost. Keeping both players would provide stability, particularly in defence, where Liverpool are set to welcome new additions and returning players, making squad depth less of a concern—provided Konaté stays.
Similarly, while Szoboszlai isn’t under immediate pressure to leave, a renewed deal would help ward off potential suitors and reinforce Liverpool’s long-term plans.
In simple terms, the club cannot afford the financial and tactical setback of having to replace both players.
Head coach Arne Slot has already suggested a possible sell-to-buy approach this window, and adding more urgent positions—such as two wingers, a flexible centre-forward, a central midfielder, and possibly a right-back—already presents a significant challenge.
With a tighter budget expected compared to last summer, sporting director Richard Hughes and his team will need to navigate the window carefully.
