As the Sunderland supporters inside the Stadium of Light sang Elvis Presley’s “Wise Men Say,” Tottenham’s head coach seemed to be hoping for less talk and far more action from his side. Even with a three-week break since their last Premier League outing, Spurs delivered a performance that fell far below expectations.
For a squad that has done plenty of speaking about responsibility, pride in the badge, and rescuing their season from an avoidable situation, the pitch told a very different story. If points were awarded for intent alone, Tottenham would already be champions.
There is little surprise that Roberto De Zerbi previously turned down interest from Spurs after Thomas Frank’s departure, and reportedly hesitated again following the unsuccessful Igor Tudor spell. Whatever assurances convinced him to take the job, one match into his reign, concerns already appear justified.
If there was any doubt before, Tottenham are far from immune to relegation danger. The intensity on display was lower than what could be found in grassroots football across the country, with players appearing passive for large parts of the match. Even their status as Europa League winners did little to reflect their approach, which looked complacent and lacking urgency.
Only in the closing stages, after an 11-minute stoppage-time board was shown, did Spurs attempt to raise their level, but by then the damage had already been done. The reality is becoming increasingly stark: without significant improvement, results will continue to define their slide.
Attention now turns to upcoming fixtures, beginning with Brighton, followed by Wolves. Failure to pick up results in those games could leave Tottenham in serious danger.
The remaining run also presents major challenges, with matches against Aston Villa, Leeds, Chelsea, and Everton still to come. Even the most hopeful supporters will now be watching with growing concern as the season reaches its conclusion.
