It is not surprising that much of the praise went to Xavi Simons after Tottenham Hotspur earned a 2-2 draw against an in-form Brighton and Hove Albion side currently pushing for a Champions League place.
The Dutch midfielder stood out with an impressive performance, supported by strong underlying statistics that showed his influence went far beyond just scoring.
However, it was also a strong collective display from Tottenham, who limited Brighton to an xG of 0.82, just two big chances, and only three shots on target. In comparison, Brighton had far stronger numbers in their 3-0 win over Chelsea, where they recorded an xG of 2.14, nine shots on target, and five big chances.
A key factor in Tottenham’s performance was the return of Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma to the midfield after a long absence. Both players played a major role in controlling the game’s tempo and protecting the defence.
Their return to a high level after time out highlighted their quality, and Roberto De Zerbi acknowledged their importance, praising their experience, leadership, and connection in midfield.
He also referenced other midfield options available in the squad, while noting the impact of Lucas Bergvall after coming off the bench.
De Zerbi further praised Tottenham’s attacking play, highlighting the approach and confidence of the forwards, particularly Dominic Solanke and Xavi Simons.
He added that there is ongoing work being done with Randal Kolo Muani, focusing on helping him bring out his full ability on the pitch.
