Sherwood expects Michael Carrick to take over at Tottenham in the event of relegation. Reports in recent weeks indicate that Carrick is under consideration for the permanent Tottenham role, with the club reportedly impressed by his impact at Manchester United.
Sherwood notes that Carrick’s experience in the Championship makes him a strong candidate to guide Spurs back to the top flight. He also mentioned Scott Parker as another option but suggested that Carrick could be Tottenham’s preferred choice if he does not receive a permanent offer from Manchester United.
Speaking to NewBetting Offers, Sherwood said: “I could see Michael Carrick managing Spurs in the Championship. I could see Scott Parker or Michael Carrick, if he doesn’t leave Manchester United, managing Spurs next season. If Carrick doesn’t stay there, I’m sure there will be a lot of clubs who want to take him. He’s level-headed, knows the game, very sensible. He has common sense, using players in the correct positions. What he’s done, bringing Kobbie Mainoo into the fold, playing a back four, which everyone understands, with a little protection in front, pushing Bruno Fernandes forward. He’s got the players to work with there. I’m sure he’s done the Championship previously as well. He’s cut his teeth there at Middlesbrough. He knows the environment. Michael’s a very good manager and if Manchester United don’t take him, I’m sure he’d be a great fit for them next season.”
Carrick had reportedly been on Tottenham’s radar even before his work at Manchester United this season. Some sources suggest he is not the favourite for the permanent Old Trafford job, with Manchester United considering other high-profile candidates. However, Spurs may face a challenge convincing Carrick to take charge if they are relegated, given that he could attract Premier League offers following his successful spell at United.
