Tottenham Hotspur have been handed an important update on one of their long-term transfer targets following a clear message received on deadline day, with the club now set to miss out on the player in future windows as well.
Thomas Frank’s side have endured a difficult Premier League campaign, sitting 14th after a disastrous first half of the season. With injuries mounting across the squad, Spurs were in urgent need of reinforcements in several areas, but their January window ultimately fell short of expectations.
Tottenham did complete the signing of Conor Gallagher from Chelsea for £35 million and added left-back Souza in a deal worth around £13 million. However, several other high-profile plans failed to materialise. The club explored multiple options throughout the window, including a prolonged pursuit of Monaco winger Maghnes Akliouche, but chose to walk away despite months of groundwork.
Spurs were also in advanced discussions over a move for Liverpool’s Andy Robertson, with a £5 million deal agreed in principle. However, the transfer collapsed after Liverpool and the player failed to give final approval.
Supporters have been left disappointed by the club’s business, and it has since emerged that Tottenham were also rebuffed in their attempt to sign Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano. Reports claim Spurs were informed on deadline day that the Frenchman would not be joining them this year, despite his contract being due to expire in the summer.
Tottenham, along with Chelsea and Liverpool, were told that Upamecano was instead focused on securing a new deal at Bayern Munich. This came as a blow, particularly with reports from Argentina suggesting Cristian Romero could leave Spurs in the summer, which would have made Upamecano an ideal replacement on a free transfer.
Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has now confirmed that Tottenham are set to miss out on the 27-year-old, with Upamecano’s contract extension nearing completion. The defender has made 178 appearances for Bayern Munich since joining from RB Leipzig for £38 million in 2021, winning three Bundesliga titles in the process.
Given his pace, strength and ability on the ball, Upamecano would have been a strong fit for Tottenham’s system, but the north London club are now watching from the sidelines as Bayern move closer to securing his future.
