The midfielder was a key figure under Thomas Frank, making 26 appearances, scoring once, and providing four assists during the Dane’s tenure.
Tottenham dismissed Frank in February and brought in Igor Tudor as interim manager until the end of the season.
Bergvall has struggled for regular minutes under Tudor due to an injury setback. He picked up an ankle injury on January 20 during Spurs’ 2-0 Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund.
Last month, Graham Potter admitted it would be difficult for the youngster to recover in time for the international break. However, Bergvall made a quicker-than-expected return, featuring in Tottenham’s 3-2 Champions League win over Atlético Madrid last week. He also came off the bench in their 3-0 league loss to Nottingham Forest over the weekend.
Despite earlier concerns, Potter still included him in the squad. On Thursday, Bergvall played 13 minutes in Sweden’s 3-1 World Cup playoff win against Ukraine.
After the match, he spoke about his recovery and return, admitting the process was challenging but rewarding. He noted that recovery timelines vary, and he was fortunate to return sooner than expected.
Bergvall explained that his main objective was to rejoin the national team, especially after many had doubted his chances following the injury. He focused on recovering as quickly as possible to achieve that goal.
With Sweden set to face Poland on Tuesday for a place at the World Cup, the midfielder says he feels ready to start, leaving the final decision to the coach.
Potter had earlier described him as “super important” to the team, a comment Bergvall said he appreciated, adding that his focus now is to contribute as much as possible and help Sweden secure World Cup qualification.
