Cristian Romero’s long-term future at Tottenham Hotspur has come under scrutiny just a day after the January transfer window slammed shut.
With deadline day passing on Monday, Premier League clubs must now wait until the summer to make further squad changes. However, speculation around Romero has quickly gathered pace, with reports emerging only hours after the window closed linking the defender with a potential move away from north London.
Journalist Gaston Edul has claimed that the Argentine centre-back is attracting interest from clubs in La Liga, although no specific teams have been named. The report suggests that Romero could leave Spurs at the end of the season and that there was also interest in him during the January window.
Despite the growing rumours, Tottenham remain in a strong position should negotiations take place, having secured Romero on a new four-year contract before the start of the current campaign.
Romero recently drew attention with an emotional Instagram post following Tottenham’s latest match, praising his teammates’ efforts while expressing frustration at the club’s injury situation. He revealed that he had pushed himself to be available despite feeling unwell, highlighting what he described as a “disgraceful” scenario in which Spurs were left with just 11 available players. He added that the squad would continue to work hard, take responsibility, and remain united, while also thanking supporters for their backing.
His comments come as Tottenham grapple with an extensive injury list. James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus, Richarlison, Pedro Porro, Ben Davies, Djed Spence, Kevin Danso, Lucas Bergvall and Dejan Kulusevski were all absent from the recent draw with Manchester City.
Tottenham were still active during the January window, allowing Brennan Johnson to join Crystal Palace on a permanent deal. Spurs moved to strengthen their squad by signing Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, while Souza arrived from Brazilian side Santos. A potential move for Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson was also explored, but negotiations failed to progress, leaving the Scotland international at Anfield.
