Tottenham Hotspur have been told that Luka Vušković is already ahead of fellow young defender Jérémy Jacquet, but they may struggle to keep hold of him amid growing interest from Bayern Munich.
That’s according to European football broadcaster Andy Brassell, who has praised the teenage centre-back after an eye-catching loan spell with Hamburg. Vušković, who joined Spurs last summer after being signed from Hajduk Split in 2023 for £12 million, was unable to move to England until he turned 18.
Loan stints with Radomiak Radom and Westerlo helped establish the Croatia international as one of Europe’s most promising defensive prospects, and he quickly impressed Tottenham supporters by scoring and assisting on his pre-season debut against Reading.
Despite that display, Thomas Frank opted to send Vušković out on a third loan, this time to the Bundesliga, to aid his development. The decision has been justified by his form in Germany, where he has scored four goals in 17 league appearances, including a spectacular effort and a recent equaliser against Bayern Munich.
His performances have attracted attention from Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, with uncertainty surrounding his long-term role at Spurs. Brassell believes Vušković is a more complete young centre-back than Liverpool’s £60 million signing Jacquet and feels Tottenham face a key decision.
He suggested Spurs could reintegrate Vušković into a back three, potentially alongside Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, or cash in on Romero while his value remains high. However, Brassell also acknowledged that Tottenham could be tempted to sell Vušković himself, given his rising value despite never having played a Premier League match.
With strong Bundesliga interest, Spurs could make a substantial profit, though Brassell feels it would be wiser to build around the teenager rather than let him go.
Former Spurs defender Ramon Vega has been more critical, claiming the club has mishandled Vušković’s development and predicting a summer exit. He believes Tottenham’s lack of clear football direction will push the defender towards Bayern.
The teenager’s reputation continues to soar, with Bayern legend Lothar Matthäus describing him as unusually intelligent for his age, while Ivan Rakitić has urged him to move to the Allianz Arena, suggesting he is ready for one of Europe’s elite clubs.
Vušković still has four-and-a-half years remaining on his Tottenham contract and is next set to feature for Hamburg away at Heidenheim this weekend.
