Despite choosing not to replace Brennan Johnson and then seeing both Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison sidelined by injuries in January, Tottenham were still comfortable allowing Dane Scarlett to head out on loan until the end of the season.
Previous spells in the EFL had failed to ignite the 21-year-old’s progress, prompting Spurs to send him north to Scotland. Edinburgh is now home, with Easter Road set to host Scarlett for the coming months, and his start to life there could hardly have gone better.
Scarlett made his full Hibernian debut on Wednesday evening in a thrilling 3–2 victory over Dundee United, providing the assist for captain Martin Boyle’s opening goal. Yet it wasn’t just that moment which caught the eye. Across 63 impressive minutes, the striker delivered a performance that left supporters buzzing. Social media quickly filled with praise, with one fan likening his touch to Dimitar Berbatov and another branding him “a class act” and “a level above.” The reaction was so strong it briefly felt as though Tottenham had let a future star slip away.
Thankfully for Spurs, Scarlett’s move is only a temporary one, though Hibs fans are already dreading the moment he will be recalled.
Scarlett first burst onto the scene in north London with a record-breaking debut that earned a glowing endorsement from then-manager José Mourinho. The Portuguese coach famously described him as “a diamond” with “incredible potential,” expressing confidence that he would grow into a top-class player if properly supported.
While Scarlett has yet to cement himself as a regular in Tottenham’s first team, there have been clear glimpses of the promise that once drew such praise. Despite some questionable handling and loan moves that failed to click, the club have not abandoned hope in the striker’s future.
Given Tottenham’s current shortage of attacking options, questions have naturally been raised about whether allowing Scarlett to leave was the right call. He has often impressed in limited opportunities in a Spurs shirt, and Thomas Frank even turned to the academy graduate ahead of Randal Kolo Muani in a recent match at Burnley, suggesting there could have been chances for him to feature.
Still, Scotland may prove the ideal environment for Scarlett’s development. With examples like Mikey Moore flourishing north of the border, the step down in overall quality could allow him to gain confidence and rhythm at senior level.
For a young forward, regular minutes are vital, and Scarlett appears well placed to secure them between now and the end of the season—an opportunity that could yet shape the next phase of his career.
