Dominik Szoboszlai has admitted that Liverpool F.C. may have to lower their ambitions if performances like the one that led to their frustrating draw with Tottenham Hotspur F.C. continue.
The Hungarian midfielder did not hide his frustration after the match, particularly after seeing his side surrender a late lead that had looked set to secure all three points.
Szoboszlai had given Liverpool the perfect start by scoring early in the game, putting the hosts in front and setting the tone for what initially appeared to be a confident display. For much of the first half, Liverpool were in control and looked comfortable. However, their inability to maintain the same intensity after the break proved costly. Just when victory seemed within reach, Richarlison struck in the 89th minute to snatch a dramatic equaliser for Tottenham, leaving Liverpool’s players and supporters stunned.
Speaking after the game, Szoboszlai admitted he struggled to pinpoint exactly what went wrong. He described the atmosphere in the dressing room as extremely frustrating, especially as it was not the first time this season Liverpool had conceded a decisive late goal.
He stressed that the team must recognise the seriousness of the situation and improve quickly if they want to compete at the highest level. The midfielder also revealed how disappointed he felt at full time, suggesting that if Liverpool continue to drop points in such circumstances, they may need to accept far lower expectations than usual.
In fact, he hinted that even qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League might have to be viewed as a positive outcome if their current form does not improve — a remark that highlights just how concerned he is about the team’s recent struggles.
Szoboszlai also pointed to the contrast between the two halves of the match. He felt Liverpool performed strongly before half-time, dominating possession and restricting Tottenham to very few chances. Aside from a few headers and isolated moments, he believed the visitors posed little real threat during that period.
After the interval, however, Liverpool lost their grip on the game and were unable to replicate the approach that had worked so well earlier.
Looking ahead, Szoboszlai emphasised the need for the squad to come together and openly discuss the problems they are facing. He acknowledged the team is going through a difficult period but insisted unity and determination are the only way forward. According to him, the players must stick together and support one another as they try to overcome this challenging phase.
He also addressed the reaction of supporters after the late equaliser. Although he said he personally did not hear the boos, he admitted the fans’ frustration is understandable. The players know they have not been performing at the level expected of them, which naturally leads to disappointment among supporters.
At the same time, Szoboszlai urged fans to continue backing the team during this tough spell. He reminded them of the joy shared last season when Liverpool lifted the league title with several matches still to play — a moment that showed the powerful connection between the club and its supporters.
Despite the recent setbacks, Szoboszlai remains hopeful that the season can still be turned around. He believes there is enough time for the squad to show their determination and prove how much representing the club means to them.
