Tottenham Hotspur have approved Guglielmo Vicario’s departure this summer, with the goalkeeper already reaching a basic agreement on a four-year deal with Inter Milan—although one key obstacle still remains.
Spurs could face a major squad clear-out if they are relegated to the Championship, a scenario that is becoming increasingly likely. With just six games left, they sit in the bottom three, two points adrift of safety. Meanwhile, teams above them—West Ham United, Nottingham Forest, and Leeds United—have all been in stronger form.
Forest recently held Aston Villa to a draw, West Ham cruised to a 4-0 win over Wolves, and Leeds pulled off an impressive 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.
New manager Roberto De Zerbi had hoped to spark an immediate turnaround, but Spurs fell to a 1-0 defeat against Sunderland in his first game, extending their poor run. Their last league win came back on December 28 against Crystal Palace.
Vicario Set for Inter Move
Despite being Tottenham’s first-choice keeper for three seasons, there is now a shared understanding that a summer exit is best. Reports suggest Vicario had already been pushing to leave following a fallout with former boss Igor Tudor, during which he was dropped for a crucial Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.
Although his form has dipped this season, Vicario remains Spurs’ top goalkeeper. De Zerbi is keen to have him back fit following hernia surgery as the season reaches its climax.
According to reports, Inter see Vicario as their top replacement for outgoing keeper Yann Sommer. The Italian has agreed to a four-year contract worth around €3m per year at the San Siro.
Transfer Fee Still Unresolved
While personal terms are nearly finalized and Tottenham are open to selling, the two clubs have yet to agree on a transfer fee. Inter are expected to bid between £15.5m and £17.5m, but it’s unclear if Spurs will accept that valuation.
If negotiations collapse, Inter could explore alternative options.
Possible Replacements for Spurs
Tottenham are already lining up replacements, including Bart Verbruggen of Brighton & Hove Albion—a player De Zerbi previously signed—and James Trafford, who may leave Manchester City after limited opportunities this season.
