Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Rob Edwards singled out Mathys Tel for special praise after Tottenham’s hard-earned 1–0 win at Molineux, crediting the young forward for playing a decisive role in the outcome.
Despite Wolves putting in a disciplined performance for much of the match, Edwards admitted that moments of individual quality ultimately made the difference — with Tel at the heart of it.
“It’s not as straightforward as people think, just turning up and beating Tottenham given their situation,” Edwards said after the game. “They’ve got real quality, and Tel showed it. Every time he got on the ball, he caused problems and shifted the momentum.”
The 20-year-old, who recently completed a permanent move from Bayern Munich, continues to grow into a key attacking figure for Spurs. His pace, direct approach, and composure were once again evident, highlighting why the club invested in him.
Wolves remained well-organised and competitive, particularly in the first half when chances were limited. However, Edwards acknowledged that Tel’s movement and willingness to take on defenders disrupted their structure.
“There were spells where we controlled things,” he added. “But players like him only need one moment. He stretched us, pushed us back, and that’s where we lost control.”
Tottenham eventually found the breakthrough late on, with João Palhinha scoring the winner to secure an important result in their relegation battle.
Edwards, whose side have already been relegated, said the defeat underlined the fine margins at the highest level.
“I’m proud of the effort, but against top players you have to be perfect for the full 90 minutes,” he said. “We weren’t, and Tel punished us. He took the game away from us.”
For Tottenham, it was further evidence of Tel’s growing influence, while for Wolves, it served as another reminder of how decisive individual brilliance can be in tight Premier League encounters.
