Xavi Simons has confirmed his season is over after suffering a serious knee injury during Tottenham’s long-awaited Premier League win in 2026, a result that briefly boosted their survival hopes.
The 23-year-old was stretchered off following a clash with Hugo Bueno, and medical tests have since revealed a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). He is expected to be sidelined for several months, ruling him out of this summer’s World Cup with the Netherlands.
Sharing his disappointment on Instagram, Simons admitted he is struggling to come to terms with the setback, describing himself as heartbroken after losing both the remainder of the season and the chance to represent his country.
Tottenham Hotspur confirmed he will undergo surgery soon before beginning rehabilitation, pledging full support throughout his recovery.
The incident was further marred by abuse from some Wolverhampton Wanderers supporters as he left the pitch, prompting an angry response from the injured midfielder.
Simons was replaced by Lucas Bergvall, while manager Roberto De Zerbi initially said the extent of the injury would be assessed, before the full diagnosis emerged.
