The Premier League champions created history during their victory over West Ham United.
Liverpool set a fresh Premier League record after their thrilling 5-2 triumph over West Ham United. On Saturday afternoon, the Reds hosted West Ham at Anfield in a fixture that felt crucial for Arne Slot’s men — and they delivered emphatically, scoring five times to claim all three points.
The result keeps Liverpool firmly in the hunt for Champions League qualification next season, with the club currently sitting fifth and level on points with rivals Manchester United.
But the three points were not the only reward. Liverpool also established a remarkable new Premier League record that may prove difficult to surpass.
The breakthrough came after just five minutes when Hugo Ekitike scored from a corner. Soon after, captain Virgil van Dijk made it two with his 28th goal for the club — again from a set piece — before Alexis Mac Allister added a third from another corner.
Thanks to their prolific first-half display, Liverpool have now scored seven consecutive Premier League goals from non-penalty set pieces, the longest such streak in the competition’s history. They also became the first side since Manchester United against Leicester City in 2016 to net three corner goals in the opening 45 minutes of a Premier League match.
Unsurprisingly, the Reds now lead the league for set-piece goals this season, a remarkable turnaround after being joint-bottom in that category from the start of the campaign until the end of 2025.
The run began when Ibrahima Konate scored from a corner in the 4-1 win over Newcastle United in January, with Florian Wirtz’s effort in that match Liverpool’s most recent open-play goal. That was followed by a 1-0 victory over Sunderland courtesy of a Van Dijk header from a corner and a Dominik Szoboszlai free kick in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.
In the match immediately before the West Ham win, Mac Allister struck a late winner that was technically classed as a set piece, as Nottingham Forest never cleared their box to allow open play to resume.
