Former Liverpool captain and television pundit Jamie Carragher did not hold back in his criticism of the display, voicing the same frustration felt by many supporters who expected a far more organized and composed performance at Rams Park.

The goal followed a corner kick situation where Victor Osimhen—a constant threat to Liverpool’s back line—rose highest to glance a header toward the far post, allowing Lemina to finish. Defensive lapses at set pieces have troubled Liverpool throughout the season, and Carragher pointed to the moment as another example of the team’s ongoing defensive instability.
Over the course of the game, Liverpool found it difficult to establish any real rhythm. The team managed by Arne Slot often appeared disorganized, especially in midfield. Carragher remarked that the side lacked “match control,” suggesting the game resembled “basketball” more than football, with play constantly swinging from end to end rather than being managed with the calm structure typically expected from an elite European side. Even with Florian Wirtz returning to the starting lineup, the attack rarely sparked into life. Key players such as Mohamed Salah struggled to make an impact before being substituted around the hour mark.
Carragher also questioned the balance of the squad following the club’s major summer additions. While he acknowledged the flair players like Wirtz bring, he argued that Liverpool may have sacrificed some of the defensive solidity that helped them achieve success in previous years. According to him, if Slot does not address these structural weaknesses quickly, Liverpool’s hopes in both the Premier League and the Champions League could quickly fade.
Despite the defeat, the tie is still far from decided. With only a one-goal deficit, Liverpool remain in contention ahead of the second leg at Anfield next Wednesday. Carragher emphasized that the players must respond not only tactically but mentally, urging them to treat the tough experience in Istanbul as a wake-up call. In his view, the club’s standards cannot allow for the sluggish and chaotic spells seen in the first meeting.
The spotlight now falls firmly on Slot to find solutions. As Carragher put it, the manager must “earn his money” by tightening up the defense and revitalizing an attack that currently appears short of ideas.
